Hiccups - Quick Solutions

Hiccup is an involuntary and uncontrolled spasm or contraction in your diaphragm

triggered when something suddenly affects your diaphragm like when you are eating certain type of food or even when you have over eaten.

The diaphragm is located below the lungs.

Any infection under the diaphragm can cause hiccups.

Note that anything that increases the carbon dioxide concentration in your system can help stop hiccups since it will help relax the diaphragm.

Once you start experiencing hiccups here are quick solutions to stop it:

1. Hold your breath for few seconds or pinch your nose while trying to breath out or

2. Drink water very quickly. This works because any time you drink water quickly, you are not breathing at that particular time. Same time the carbon dioxide in your system increases which then stops the hiccups or

3. Try to gargle with a very cold water or

4. For more severe hiccups what you can do is cover your mouth and nose at the same time with a water proof or some air tight cover. Then try to breath in and out into it for a few seconds. This helps to reduce the oxygen level in your system and increase carbon dioxide which stops the hiccups

 5. Another strategy is to inhale three times. Inhale through your nose, do not exhale. Instead of exhaling, inhale again as difficult as it is, do not exhale then attempt to inhale again. That is a total of three inhales. Then hold your breath at this point. Do not exhale for about 15 seconds then slowly exhale.
