Morphea is a rare skin disorder also known as localized Scleroderma
characterized by excessive collagen deposition called fibroblasts.
They usually form patches of discolored or hardened skin. The skin changes usually appear on face, neck, hands, abdomen or legs.
The condition is quite rare and known to affect less than 3 out of 100,000 people.
Types of Scleroderma
1. Localized Scleroderma : affects the skin
2. Systemic Scleroderma: affects the skin and underlying tissues, major organs and blood vessels
Symptoms of Scleroderma
The severity of symptoms depends on which part of the body affected by the disease.
Hardening and discoloration of the affected skin is a common symptom. A build up of scar tissue can occur which may damage internal organs of the body
What causes Scleroderma
There are thoughts that scleroderma is caused by an abnormal activity in the immune system which causes overproduction of collagen.
Exposure to silica dust, paints, chemotherapeutic treatments may increase the risk of this skin disease.
Treatment
1. At the onset of morphea lesions the use of Corticosteroid creams or injections can be effective
2. It can also be treated with Calcipotriene cream (Dovonex or Taclonex). This is a vitamin D cream.
A little application at a time works as well since the product is very expensive. Once applied, wrap the treated area with a cling film to enhance absorption and effectiveness
3. The use of ultraviolet light called phototherapy may be used to treat severe or widespread morphea.
