Think of the years of our grandmothers when they could tell ones age by merely looking at the hands and feet. Why was it possible? What signs did they look out for? I think it had to do with the quality of the skin.
Bearing this in mind let us find out what habits contribute to the aging of our hands.
The main causes are:
- Sun damage
- Water
- Exposure to cold weather
For instance, water is one enemy of the hands that still surprises me. This is because the same water refreshes the inner body. It is used to wash our hands and keep our environment clean. Water is also used in the production of beauty products that help reduce the signs of skin aging and the list goes on and on.
So why is water harmful to the hands? It is because water weakens the nails and dries out the skin.
I would recommend wearing gloves while washing dishes, washing clothes and during exposure to cold weather. Since wearing gloves is not an option for some people, I will advice you to always have a hand lotion of some sort around you. You can have a small container that can fit into your purse. You can also have a hand lotion in the kitchen and in the bathroom. The point here is that the hand needs to be regularly moisturized.
To moisturize the hands there are affordable hand creams that you can make at home. Examples are Shea Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil, Vaseline, Olive Oil etc. I prefer shea Butter because it is one of the best ways to relieve extreme skin dryness and itching arising from exposure to the cold weather.
You can go further by giving your hands some 'tender loving care'. This method I will share with you will help bleach the hands by removing dark sports and freckles.
Simply mix together to form a paste 3 teaspoons of cornmeal with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of rosewater. Apply it on hands and leave for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash off and apply a good hand cream. You can do this once in a while.
