Manic Depression often develops at a young age when the person is below 20 years old. Adults with this mental illness most likely did not develop it as adults.
Symptoms of a Manic Depressive person:
1. High moods or mania:
2. Depression or low moods
A manic episode feels like having a strong burst of energy, excitement and euphoria. This heightened state often makes the person feel untouchable like he or she is above the law or can get away with anything. The person may talk fast and even cut people off during a conversation.
This same person at some point can fall so low in his or her mood, feel depressed, hopeless and frustrated.
Mania has four stages:
1. Hypomania:
2. Acute mania:
3. Delusional mania
4. Delirious mania
When a person with Bipolar Disorder is in a relationship, in love, interested in someone or is not wanted by his or her partner, you will notice that he or she will display irrational behaviors, mood swings, extreme harshness followed by sudden guilt and urgent need for quick resolution.
If you can talk to someone with Bipolar Disorder you should calmly respond to him or her. Do not make comments to trigger an episode. Your emotional maturity will go a long way to help you manage their words and actions. If possible find a way to give him or her food and drinks. Keep the atmosphere calm and relaxing. Speak softly to the person.
To know if you are Bipolar you would have had such manic episodes that persist for a long time sometimes lasting two weeks. Treatment with medication is highly recommended to prevent such manic episodes going on for months or even a year.
Treatment:
Manic Depressive Disorder is treated with an antimenic or antipsychotic medication administered by a certified medical doctor.
This medication will help the person be in control of his or her mood. It will keep them from self harm or harming others. The medication keeps the person sane.
You can also try to stop a manic episode by being aware of the signs that such episode is about to start. Stay calm, take a lot of water to hydrate from within, stay away from the triggers and seek help. Taking the prescribed antimenic medication will also help greatly.
