Kojic Acid is a powder made from Aspergillus and A. Oryzea which
is known as Koji.It prevents hyper pigmentation of tissues in both plants and animals. It is a color changer but the color change is not permanent. It only temporary reduces the concentration of melanin on the skin.
Kojic acid acts as an antioxidant by helping to protect the skin from the harsh effects of the sun. It has antimicrobial properties which works on inflammations and breakouts in the skin. It also has anti-aging properties.
Kojic acid helps to prevent the formation of melanin on the skin by blocking the formation of tyrosine. This is the brightening effect of kojic acid on the skin.
Kojic acid can clear out skin discolorations in between the inner thighs. It can lighten brown spots, freckles and melasma.
It can be applied even on sensitive skin once a day. It is best applied before sun exposure, preferably overnight. When applied on face, leave it to sit on face for few minutes then rinse off with water. You can then apply your regular moisturiser afterwards.
Kojic acid can be combined with vitamin c, niacinamide, azelaic acid and even hydroquinone but it is important to note that such combinations may cause skin irritations especially on sensitive skin. It is not safe to use kojic acid with drying ingredients and even exfoliants. Kojic acid can be mixed with your regular cream. You can test the mixture gradually until you get the numbers that work well and safely on your skin.
Studies have shown that kojic acid can work as well as hydroquinone but give better results than hydroquinone.
Kojic acid as an antioxidant is also good for oily skin and acne-prone skin but should not really serve as a regular acne treatment. Benzoyl peroxide works better as an acne treatment.
Kojic acid expiration date is usually provided by the manufacturer on the bottle but within few months kojic acid oxidizes and the color can turn brown. Some may find that the color change can affect their ability to use it but if the manufacturer stated that it does not affect the quality of the product, it may still be safe to use.
