Why Did I Feel Unsafe In A Super Store?
What they did wrong:
1. There was a so-called sanitizing spray box stationed at the entrance of the store which sprays you with maybe a disinfectant of some sort. You walk through it so there are high chances the spray did not reach the palm of the hands.
2. There should have been an employee stationed at the entrance of the store to directly pour hand sanitizer on customers hands before letting them into the store.
3. The same employee should have also been given a thermometer to check customers body temperature at the entrance point. Check out the latest thermometers - some read your body temperature in seconds just by you standing close to it.
4. There were too many shoppers inside the store at the same time. Social distancing score was Zero.
5. Some customers had their face masks on but few did not wear a face mask while some had it on but covered only their mouths.
So What Do You Do To Protect Yourself In A Busy Store or Open Market Like That?
1. Make sure any clothe you are wearing covers as much skin as possible. Let it cover your hands, legs. If possible tie a hair scarf or hold your hair together with a hair band. Do not wear any flowing gown. The gown can pick up the virus as you walk through a busy shop or market. If possible wear a long sleeved T-shirt and a trouser.
2. Wear a face mask. Any face mask will do. Just make sure it is wide enough to cover your nose and mouth.
3. Talk only when it is very necessary.
4. Do not walk into a shop with your children even if they are wearing a face mask. So many Nigerians believe that once they are wearing a face mask they are protected. Kids can easily pick up this virus in stores.
5. You should have a space in your hands for a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Sanitize your way through the shop.
6. Never touch your face. If you must, make sure your hands are properly sanitized. If you have long nails, make sure the hand sanitizer targets the inner corners of your nails.
7. Only touch items you are sure to buy. Do not touch and keep items on the shelves as you like. Your eyes should do more of the job of selecting the items you want. When you are sure, pick it up and drop in the shopping basket or shopping bag if you are in the market. Avoid touching surfaces and railings.
8. At the counter, let no one help you put the things you bought in a shopping bag. Do it yourself. Carry things to your car yourself or who ever you came with. The less your things are touched by the public, the less exposed you are to Covid-19.
9. Make sure you have your purse close by so that you can easily reach it at the counter. Avoid digging around your bag looking for your cash, ATM card, or phone to make payment. You are probably contaminating the contents of your hand bag if you do so.
10. If you have a cloth or nylon spread it on the floor of the booth of the car or wherever you may be placing your shopped items. Do this prior to entering the shop or market. On your way out of the shop, carefully place all shopped items on it.
11. When you get home, assume that all items you bought from the store and what you wore to the store may be contaminated. Take steps to clean, wash, disinfect, sanitize every single item from the store. For food stuffs, wash properly (not with soap of bleach please).
The outer part of a sealed container of food should be wiped clean with soap and water.
Avoid touching your face in this step. Change the clothes you wore to the store. Wash your hands for 20seconds or more under running water with soap. .
